My Little Life Partner
As a kid I wished to have a partner with whom I could play, eat, and go out to the movies with. Now I have a best buddy, a game mate, and partner who looks out for me and stands up to my mom to defend me. His self-care and personal appearance, personality, and his many similarities to me, are characteristics that make him a unique self and is what make him irreplaceable in my life.
His physical appearance is a total charm. Up until now, his hair has remained as black and shiny as the day he was born. When I touch his head, I can feel his soft hair. I can also smell it, it has a soft and delicate scent, it smells as freshener fabric sheets. I can get a sense of how much he cares about his hair, he likes to have it well trimmed and brushed. When he is feeling relax or he is going to have a normal day at school or at home, he would put some cream and brush it to the side, like a mini Justin Bieber. However, if he is feeling too confident or has an event to go to, he would apply gel and ask me to help him style it with the hair blower. Once his hair is styled with gel, he won’t let anyone touch it or get close to it. His face, as he would describe it to me while sticking his bottom lip out, is a baby face. His eyelashes are long, they have good volume, and I have heard multiple people compliment them. The second body part he takes care of the most, besides his hair, are his lips. Every morning, right after getting dressed he will run to the bathroom and apply either cocoa butter or Vaseline. As well as every night before going to bed makes sure he brushes his teeth before applying oil capsules to his lips, so the oil doesn’t get removed. He is not totally obsessed with himself, but he takes good care of his physical appearance.
While it is very nice to know how much he cares for his own body, his personality is not far behind. He is very athletic, which is somewhat good because I must admit he’s good at many sports. However, because he likes sports so much he is also very competitive. One time we were in Florida, and we saw this Ping-Pong table, we both love to play, and he dared me to beat him at a game to prove who is the best player. A little over three hours after we went back to our room to find his entire face and chest red of sunburn, all because he wouldn’t leave the table until he won one game. He is caring and loving towards others, he does not like to be rude or mistreat anyone. His best friend’s name is Derek, and literally, wherever we go, he would tag him along with us, but is nice to see them both care for each other that much. Something else about his personality that is very sweet is how sensible he is. We both love movies. In fact, is our tradition to either on Saturday or Sunday, we would set a movie and I’ll make popcorn while he makes sandwiches and drinks for the two of us, then we’ll sit in the floor and watch as many movies as we’ll want. I have seen how most males won’t allow themselves to cry or feel any type of emotion that will show their soft spot. Well, he is not like that. By the end of each movie, when the drama is over, and the problem is resolved he would be crying and laughing at the happy ending. He is also very talkative, and an easy-going person. No matter where he is, he will always find something to entertain himself with. He also likes showing affection, every now and then he would give me a kiss or a hug and tell me how much he loves me.
Lastly, we share multiple similarities that sometimes creates conflict between us, but most of the time is what makes us inseparable. If I must choose a partner in crime, he would definitely get the part. Sometimes we both have to do chores like laundry or cook or clean the dishes, but multiple times we would convince each other to leave that for later and go for ice cream or play video games. We find interest in the same activities. He likes playing sports, any sport that implements a ball will make him have a good time, and I am always the one he comes up to play with him. We both love playing video games, the same music genre, the same movies, we even share our favorite restaurant. I remember all the times we have been to Six Flags or Hershey’s Park, he is always my riding buddy. He likes the adrenaline that high, scary roller coasters give you, the same way I like them too. At any amusement park, you’ll see us with a water bottle and a cup of ice cream making lines for all fun games.
Qualities such as physical appearance and personal care, great personality, and so many similarities with me that make him the human being he is today, are what make my little brother the most amazing life partner I could have ever wished for. He is a kid full of energy, joy, and love for himself and others and even though I am much older than he is, we share common likes and dislikes. When we sleep together, we like to have the fan on no matter how cold it is. We both dislike hot drinks. We both procrastinate while walking but take us to Disney World and we will gladly walk the whole park up and down. We love pizza with barbecue sauce instead of tomato sauce, and pineapple on it. All these things we have in common make us get along and complement each other so well.
Descriptive Essay Self-Reflection
Writing a descriptive essay over a narrative was much easier for me. Since the focus of my essay was my little brother, naturally I had many ways in which I was able to describe him. The genre of my essay was a description of my brother’s physical and personal characteristics and how that makes him irreplaceable to me. I felt motivated to write about him because there is no one else I know the way I know him, and there is no one who would complete me the way he does. While writing my descriptive essay, it helped to think back to some of the readings we had done for class exercises and then incorporate some of the description techniques the readings had applied. One of these examples is sensory details. I had to think on every way that makes my little brother recognizable, and then bring that into sentences. For instance, when I thought about my brother’s smell, I had to describe the gentle, smooth, and comforting aroma of baby cologne. Both the genre and using a class reading as materials that helped during the writing process are part of the explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.
After finishing the first draft of my descriptive essay, I handed some copies to my groupmates and instructor that were returned to me with feedback. All of this feedback helped me elaborate and edit my last draft to present. My group peers helped me correct some of my grammar errors such as sentence composition, grammar, misspelling or misuses of some words. However, my instructors’ feedback was more focused on the composition of the essay, as well as the audience and how I could approach my audience better. Some examples of this feedback are, switching between past and present tense within the same paragraph, which in my essay I did very often, therefore I had to reread my entire essay and make sure it had a nicer flow within the paragraphs. Also, some other constructive criticism was made on how I could have left out some unnecessary information, as well as added some other details. All these comments helped the writing process of my last draft more focused on the parts I had to improve and edit. With that said, the developed strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing part of the course learning outcomes are fulfilled.
In class, I also helped my peers with providing them with constructive criticism I thought would help their descriptive essay. However, from reviewing my peers’ papers I was able to see some mistakes they had done that I did on my paper as well. Thanks to the collaboration and the engagement on the writing process my classmates and I were able to beneficiate from each other while helping one another better their papers.
